Tenebris: Terra Incognita Equipment & Arsenal
Rarity tiers, shop versus field drops, and how gear turns talent trees into finished builds.
Gear is the second half of every Tenebris: Terra Incognita build. Talent trees decide what a hero wants to do; weapons, armor, implants, and special equipment decide whether that fantasy survives contact with Misty Wastes swarms, Pyrite caves, Necronoms, and world bosses. Version 1.0 reworked the arsenal toward fewer drops and higher quality, so every legendary and mythic find matters more than it did in Early Access. This guide explains rarity tiers, shop versus mission loot, unlock levels for top-end gear, early priorities, and how equipment interacts with implants and talents.
Pair this page with Solaris Base for warehouse spending, Builds for kit goals, and Difficulty Tips when the economy is the real boss.
Why equipment matters in 1.0
Phantasmica Studios designed heroes so items can modify talents or unlock abilities. A sniper with the wrong scope is a soft Pellentes; the same hero with armor-ignore and concentration tools becomes a delete button. After the 1.0 arsenal pass, you should expect:
- Less junk cluttering the warehouse
- Higher average value on meaningful drops
- Stronger pressure to outfit a core four before dressing the entire bench
- Clear power spikes when legendary and mythic tiers open
There is no multiplayer trading and no redeem codes. Every plate and rifle comes from missions, the Solaris shop, or carefully banked resources.
Rarity tiers at a glance
Exact UI color names can shift with patches, but campaign planning uses a practical ladder:
- Common / uncommon starter kits — tutorial and early Misty Wastes reliability.
- Rare mid-tier weapons and armor — the first real identity pieces for Miles, Pellentes, Defencor, Medicus, and Technicus.
- Epic specialty gear — often the first items that noticeably rewrite a talent or add a combat tool.
- Legendary (from roughly level 21 content) — long-term investment pieces for promoted careers.
- Mythic / red (around level 30) — endgame ceiling gear aimed at world bosses and the hardest late biomes.
Treat the level gates as content readiness, not a promise that every level-21 mission spits legendaries. You still need the right mission band, professions, and luck—Marauder corpse quality, Scout secrets, and Hacker locks all improve how often good rolls appear. See Biomes & Map for profession routing.
Arsenal shop versus mission drops
Think of two pipelines:
Solaris arsenal / warehouse purchases
The ship shop and warehouse convert scarce currency into guaranteed upgrades. Use them when:
- Your tank still wears starter plating before a boss icon
- A primary DPS lacks a clean armor-break or finish weapon
- You need biome answers (flamethrowers before Pyrite) and the map will not wait
- A talent synergy requires a specific implant or special item you can buy now
Buying impulsively after every sortie is how expeditions go broke. Bank a reserve for the next story beat, then spend on the role that failed last fight.
Mission and exploration drops
Field loot is where high-ceiling pieces hide. After the 1.0 quality pass, empty chests hurt more because you see fewer filler guns. Habits that pay off:
- Clear side rooms even when the exit is open
- Bring the profession that matches the node (locks, rubble, corpses, secrets)
- Rotate a second foursome so injuries do not force you to skip loot-heavy maps
- Compare every drop against the job of the hero, not the rarity sparkle alone
A rare weapon that enables Combat Concentration setups can outvalue a prettier gun with no synergy. Cross-check combat timing on Combat Tactics.
Legendary at ~21 and mythic at ~30
Career promotions near levels 11 and 21 already rewrite kits; legendary gear is the equipment echo of the second promotion. Practical rules:
- Do not panic-farm legendaries at level 15. Stabilize rare/epic kits, finish early story pacing, and promote with intent first—see Story Walkthrough and Career System.
- Around level 21, start routing missions that can drop or unlock legendary-quality finds for your primary damage dealer and tank.
- Around level 30, mythic (red) pieces become realistic for world-boss preparation. Underleveled mythic chasing usually means failed attempts and hospital debt.
World bosses want ~level 30 teams. Legendary weapons on a level-22 squad help; mythic on a coordinated four finishes the fantasy.
What to prioritize early
A reliable first-hours shopping list:
- Frontliner armor and mitigation for Defencor (or your acting tank). If the wall falls, snipers and medics melt.
- One clean primary weapon for Miles or Pellentes—accuracy and armor interaction beat raw tooltip damage.
- Healer tools that keep Medicus relevant (injectors, cleanses, sustain items).
- Biome answers before you dive: fire kits for Pyrite Tree caves.
- Utility specials for Technicus when locks and gadgets gate value.
Delay exotic experiments until the core four can clear recommended-level Misty Wastes without triage emergencies. Getting Started covers the early loop; this page is where you decide which warehouse slot deserves the next stack of resources.
Implants, specials, and talent interaction
The fun of Tenebris buildcraft is the triangle of talent tree + equipment + squad role:
- Items may alter existing talents (stronger breaks, better burns, extra initiative tools).
- Items may grant or unlock abilities that were not in the base kit.
- Implants and specials often decide whether a hero can enter Combat Concentration setups or trigger combos reliably with allies.
Before you socket an implant:
- Read the hero’s current tree after any career unlock.
- Ask which fight problem you are solving (armor sponges, swarms, accuracy debuffs, long bosses).
- Check whether Builds already recommends a direction for that line (sniper cores, Miles duos, Centurio–Phoenix mechs, Librator hybrids).
- Respec leftover talents if the item changed the rotation.
A legendary that fights your tree is warehouse clutter. An epic that completes a combo loop is a campaign accelerant.
Loadout planning by campaign phase
Early (Misty Wastes)
Reliability > ceiling. Outfit Defencor and one carry, keep Medicus functional, and ignore fashion rarity.
Mid (post–level 11, Pyrite opens)
Spend on promoted kits. Impetum, Sancto, Vidua, Legionnaire, Ignifer, and related lines want gear that matches their new identity. Fire and armor-break tools become mandatory for caves—see Bosses before named fights.
Late (Great Glacier, Necronoms, world bosses)
Refresh the whole four. Necronom rules punish autopilot loadouts that dominated insect packs. Bank legendary upgrades for the heroes who will stand in world-boss attempts, then chase mythic once levels approach 30. Version 1.0 summarizes why the late roster and arsenal both changed.
Common gear mistakes
- Spreading every drop evenly across eight heroes instead of finishing a core four
- Buying duplicate weapons while the tank still wears starter plates
- Entering Pyrite without fire tools “to save money”
- Equipping legendaries on bench tourists who never leave the ship
- Ignoring profession loot routes, then blaming the arsenal rework for “no drops”
- Evaluating items without reading talent interactions after a career hold-to-unlock
Tie-ins and next steps
- Fund and store gear via Solaris Base.
- Choose kit goals on Builds and Best Squads.
- Protect the economy with Difficulty Tips.
- Time story and side farming using Story Walkthrough.
- Re-check late threats on Biomes & Map and Version 1.0.
Outfit the expedition like a finite war chest. Fewer, better items—spent on the right promoted heroes—are how 1.0 commanders reach mythic red without drowning in warehouse noise.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
When do legendary and mythic gear matter in Tenebris?
Plan legendary-quality upgrades around level 21 content and mythic (red) pieces near level 30 for world bosses. Earlier tiers still carry the Misty Wastes and Pyrite.
Should I buy from the arsenal or wait for mission drops?
Buy when a core role is undergeared for the next story or boss icon. Farm drops for high-ceiling pieces, and always clear chests with the right professions.
What changed about the arsenal in version 1.0?
The arsenal was reworked toward fewer drops with higher average quality, so each meaningful find and purchase matters more than during Early Access.
How do implants and equipment interact with talents?
Items can modify talents or unlock abilities. Match gear to the hero’s career tree and combo plan, then respec if the rotation changed.
What should I upgrade first early on?
Tank armor, one primary DPS weapon, healer tools, then biome answers like flamethrowers. See Solaris Base and Difficulty Tips for spending discipline.
